From acinemahistory.com : " The most interesting aspect is the subject chosen: a woman joining the Nihilist movement as a reaction to police repression in Tsarist Russia. The film shows a clear empathy for terrorist action, which is an unusual theme in early cinema and shows the freedom which existed in American cinema at the time ."

Max visits a doctor who prescribes a tonic, but Max overdoses and goes about the day in a completely drunken state. The comedy is mainly visual (only 12 distinct title cards), so I've enjoyed this without translation for years before finally succumbing to curiosity and consulting online translation tools. It seems humor is intended in the names: - PLACIDE TRAFALGAR, Minister of War   PLACIDE translates as "calm"   TRAFALGAR was a famous naval defeat of the French by the British -...

Eva is a young woman who works in a variety store for a meager salary, solely supporting her two parents and three sisters - while her father lies in bed reading dime novels, smoking his pipe, and drinking pails of beer. As her only pair of shoes disintegrates from long use, so does her hopes, her respect for her father, and her resistance against a leering cabaret singer. NOTE: The final 15 minutes has a few places with significant film deterioration.

The 2005 killing of attorney Fabian Lim Ann Hoaw in Sarawak Malaysia pre-dated most of Malaysia's online news sources, so online information is scarce. Marina di Malombra is the beautiful and sophisticated young niece of a count. She could be described in the terms used in a 1967 work : "dominant, secure, self-confident, nasty, violent, selfish, independent, proud, thrill-seeking, free-wheeling, arrogant females, who consider themselves fit to rule the universe". Marina becomes convinced she is the reincarnation of a madwoman out for fatal revenge. Corrado Silla is a sensitive young man born into nobility, but now on the verge of...

This was the first of the many adaptations of the best-selling 1930 romantic novel "Fate in Tears and Laughter (啼笑因緣)" , which is cited as a representative of the Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies genre. As this is merely an assembly of fragments of the film, and nearly a quarter of this is missing the dialogue, it's not likely that many viewers will find it entertaining. Perhaps it's best viewed as an object of historical interest: - First of (at least) seven film adaptations of...

Alternate English title: "A Dream in Pink" A 1932 Shanghai femme fatale melodrama with comic touches, closer to the style of Hollywood than was typical of Shanghai films of that era (and including a direct reference to Ernst Lubitsch's 1929 "Love Parade") . IMPORTANT: Music begins at peak volume, so that volume can immediately be set to a comfortable level. While writers often claim "The Musketeers of Pig Alley" (released 6 months after this) established the gangster film genr e , this short film racks up two cop killings, a carjacking, two bank robberies, a car chase/shootout, and synchronized shooting in stylish long coats (late 1980s HK film-style). The fight scene in the 1931 silent film A Spray Of Plum Blossoms (一剪梅) appears dull and clumsy, with no apparent attacks. But when slowed down, it looks like "push hands" demos of a Taichi-style defense. Taichi or not, it's still a dull fight. But that may be intentional, since neither character has a taste for bold heroics: one constantly chases women, the other pursues power and wealth. Both prefer deceit over daring.

Extrajudicial executions by US police are receiving greater attention, leading to calls for "justice". The US, as the world's top jailer, interprets "justice" to mean caging someone in prison. So aren't these calls to arrest, judge, and imprison killer cops merely a conditioned response, that only helps maintain the existing power structure (in particular, the criminal justice system) rather than change or eliminate it?

Obama to Taiwan: Freedom to choose is just a ruse we use. You can elect any SOB you want, so long as he's our SOB. Washington, not the people of Taiwan, knows what is best for Taiwan because Taiwan is not yet ready for self-determination. After years of Obama's pseudo-progressive rhetoric, it was perversely refreshing to see US neocolonial arrogance once again displayed in full splendor, as Washington and Beijing played "good cop/bad cop" in a US invasion of Taiwan's elections. On Sept. 13, 1971, New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller ordered armed state troopers to raid the prison in Attica, New York, ending a prison uprising to protest inhumane conditions at the facility. Troopers then indiscriminately shot over 2,000 rounds of ammunition, killing 29 prisoners and 10 guards. Recently released audio recordings provide a glimpse into the bizarre savage rituals of US federal and local rulers coming together. "I think the combination of age and a greater coming together...

In his prepared speech (March 28, 2011) Obama used noble words to justify the bombing of Libya, with much talk of freedom and human rights. But, in an impromptu reply given in a March 11 press briefing, he spoke more openly about the economic mission of the attack, using the notorious language of the WTO/World Bank - "opening up" to the "global economy" - and citing China and India as models.

San Jose police chief Rob Davis recently told a court about "the irreplaceable value of a police officer's life". And then the person on trial was sentenced to life plus 47 years. I did nothing about it - only posted this mashup. That's all there is. Now you can go back to sleep.

Like other crimes that took place in the South during the civil rights era, the Till murder case has been repackaged to fit the standard narrative of civil rights tourism. This presentation reexamines the case, exploring the role of the prosecution in maintaining Mississippi's brand of white supremacy.

I read the news today oh, boy. About a man who was not so lucky , didn't make the grade. Then came voices and images from the past...and I understood. The sentencing of DeShawn Campbell, accused of killing a San Jose policeman, is placed in context: from Odessa, to Bombingham, Columbia Revolt, Rizzo-delphia, Battle in Seattle, and beyond. "If there are any additional confrontations, I can assure you that the police will take care of it. We will not brook any nonsense. Anybody who takes us...

The police chief in Palo Alto CA wants Tasers. The City Council appointed a task force to advise the Council. In the previous meeting the task force voted to bring Tasers to Palo Alto. In their final meeting on April 24 2007, task force members first spend a large part of their time discussing whether they should have a discussion, then complain that listening to the public took too much of their time. A must-see for die-hard masochists. Follow this link to presentation of Aram James, Coalition...

While Virginia and other states have recently apologized for their role in the involuntary sterilization of those labeled as "feebleminded" , the Supreme Court ruling that sanctioned those sterilizations has never been overruled - so the precedent still stands. But the case of Carrie Buck also established a precedent in deception: Carrie Buck's lawyer conspired with the opposing lawyer to guarantee that her challenge would fail, so that the sterilization law would be upheld by the...
